Description

Here is an image of the 'Medusa' galaxy, known as Arp 160 or NGC 4194 which I took a few weeks ago.

It is a galaxy that Halton Arp showed some interest in and he included it in his 'Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies', where he classified it as 'disturbed with interior absorption'

My image shows the galaxy and Medusa's hair, the fan shaped structure to the North of the main galaxy. It doesn't reveal the black hole discovered by Chandra in 2009 and discussed in this video:

My image consists of 50 x 120 sec exposures sigma combined in Astroart3. Some additional, fairly severe, processing was done in Pixinsight to enhance the fainter features at the expense of some background noise but overall I was quite pleased to produce some detail from this rather faint and difficult subject.
